“Boston is not a “museum,” as hipness-deprived college students, transplanted New Yorkers, and ex-suburbanites complain — because museums are supposed to preserve the past. Instead, this city has become a simulacrum of itself, a gift shop(pe) writ large.”

"Obviously that involves kinetic military action, particularly on the front end."

“Obviously that involves kinetic military action, particularly on the front end.”

The word to describe what the United States is doing in Libya is ‘war.’  The word to describe the language the administration is using to talk about what they are doing in Libya is ‘Orwellian.’

Incidentally, System of a Down had a great tune about this back in, fuck, ‘98: ‘Of war, we don’t speak any more’ indeed.

"Democrats and other critics said the president had no right to brag about a deficit that remains so…"

Democrats and other critics said the president had no right to brag about a deficit that remains so large in the fifth year of an economic expansion. They pointed out that the deficit this year will be the fourth-largest ever, and that Bush inherited a surplus when he took office in 2001.

“Only Washington Republicans would think a 0 billion deficit is good news,” Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) said in a written statement.

Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a bipartisan group, said the new figures are “nothing to break open the champagne over.”

“We have experienced a neck-wrenching swing from large surpluses to large deficits since the start of the decade,” MacGuineas said.

Found this while reading IOZ posts from 2006.  Looking to the recent past confirms one of Monsieur IOZ’s more recent points about the current campaign of union-busting: management punishing labor for the mistakes of management.  0 billion in the whole during a strong economy.  I mean, who taught these people how to count?

(I guess I shouldn’t play dumb.  ‘These people’ count votes and campaign contributions, and poorly managing the government’s finances does not impact these dependent variables in what would be called a linear fashion.)

"So on Tuesday I rage spiraled into space for a while when I was told that Todd Goldman was ripping…"

“So on Tuesday I rage spiraled into space for a while when I was told that Todd Goldman was ripping off my designs AGAIN.
I know my designs are simple and play on ideas we all understand but the fact is Goldman offered me a job in 2006. He said he loved my Threadless shirts, that he bought a Lil Soap shirt and wanted me to work for him. I told him I would think about it and we never spoke again. A few months later I get links from people to David and Goliath tees, the company he owns and he is selling rip offs of my designs.
So Threadless got their lawyers involved and sent him a cease and desist and eventually, (probably because he was also being sued by ANOTHER artist at the time: http://tinyurl.com/5ubyu7o ) he took them down. Now he is selling them again, as you can see in the above image.
Then as always, whenever I talk about my shirts being ripped off I get emails telling me about more rip offs. This time an Etsy user, Tyneshia Buie who straight up TRACED the design.
I’ve had my shirts ripped off A LOT, Forever 21, Hot Topic, Wet Seal, and every time it gives me insane stomach ulcers and I have to track down the thieving “designers” and send Cease and Desist messages and contact Threadless and lawyers. It’s called protecting your copyright and it’s AWFUL HARD.
At any rate, this Etsy seller was selling the most blatant straight up TRACE of my art work I have ever seen. I got some help from some nice twitter people and the design was removed from the site, but not the seller. As you can see in the image above she isn’t oblivious or ashamed, she knew what she was doing.
The point is that art theivery is fucking bullshit. No one should buy from this girl again, or Todd Goldman/David and Goliath but they do! I’m sure that Etsy user will continue to steal and D+G has merchandise in every major crap store in the world. Help me spread the word that these people are VILLAINS and not in a cool way.
You can see the LONG LEGACY of art theivery by Todd Goldman/ David and Goliath here:http://travelswithjesus.com/todd_goldman/

As for me, I am sending Cease and Desist messages and contacting lawyers and bathing in a see of stomach acid as I rage spiral into space.”

“On Wednesday, the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau offered a way to salvage 5 million in debt by refinancing savings. It had said the bill could pass as late as early April if other accounting moves were done by Walker’s administration to extend the debt refinancing deadline by a month.”

Are you now or have you ever been?

Mr. King and Mr. McDonough each took pains on Sunday to say that he had no quarrel with the other. “We welcome any involvement in the issue,” Mr. McDonough said of the hearings. “It’s an important issue.”

No, actually, it’s not.  At least, not in the way the House Committee on Un-American Activities hearings on “The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim Community and That Community’s Response” suppose that it is.

The United States is a populous country with a lot of guns.  As with any population, some segment of the population is unstable, for lack of a better term; at any given point in time, some number of people are close to deciding to kill a bunch of strangers for the sake of avenging Muslims/becoming famous/stopping government sponsored grammar-based mind control/saving fetuses.  Periodically, one of these people goes off.  If that person is a Muslim, they’re a terrorist; random white guys are crazy or ‘tax protester[s].’

This is certainly a problem or ‘important issue’ for our society, but it’s not the issue Representative King wants to address in his little hearings, nor is it the problem addressed by the security apparatus’s long list of foiled plots that they themselves instigated.

What he have here is a great way to win a few votes from constituents scared of monsters hiding under their beds.

Comprendre, c’est pardoner.: intherainyseason: “You want to know why we keep losing our battles, on…:

intherainyseason:

“You want to know why we keep losing our battles, on the front for legal and accessible abortion? Those names. Those men. Those Democrats, and the people who think like them, and the people who don’t call them out. That’s why.”

A hundred, a thousand, a million times

If the point is to look bast the bi-partisan fight going on in American politics, then you just recreated that power struggle by telling people to abandon the democrats. By saying the system’s fucked, you’re recreating the system and all it’s going to do is escalate divides between the two.

I’d say escalating the divide between the two may be the right idea?  Sady’s criticizes the Democrats for compromising on what ought to be a fundamental: women’s right to choose and access to abortion.  I argue that the Democrats – ostensibly the party of feminism, of peace, of ‘the little guy,’ – are part of the reason ‘we keep losing’ so many important fights.  When we go to the polls and vote for the ‘lesser of two evils,’ we are pretty much guaranteeing that next time around, we’ll still only have the two options to choose from.  Two parties representing essentially similar perspectives on politics, and receiving funding from the same sources, is not a good situation for a democracy, nor is it a good recipe for anything but the most superficial, incremental change.

But two your point, I agree that focusing too much on the power struggle between the two – essentially similar – parties is a waste of time and energy.  But to the extent anyone thinks they need someone working for them in the legislature, I think it’s important not to get caught up in the Democrats story about that power struggle – ‘You need to vote us in or else those truly scary Republicans will gain control.’  Because part of that story is going ‘centrist’ on issue when they’re supposed to take a stand.
