“In general, if a pastime is not classy, those who love it are “addicted.” Opera and poetry buffs are “passionate.””

Thoughts?  I’d say some of the arguments here may not hold up under pressure: a single novel about someone obsessed with movies is not the same as a widespread belief in “internet addiction,” and Heffernan doesn’t do a lot to show how the behavior of opera aficionados is similar to chronic web users.  But the larger point is, I think, a good one.  I suspect for most cases, the “addiction” to the internet is a metaphorical one at most.  There’s a generational gap, the internet is “low” culture, people freak the fuck out about being “wired”, etc.

On the other had I’m supposed to be doing research and YET SOMEONE IS WRITING THIS BLOG POST.  #itsmeimtheonewritingit #iamastraightupinternetaddict #cries4help
